What Is The Relay For Life?
The Relay For Life is an overnight event that brings communities together in the
fight against cancer. It is a way to celebrate cancer survivors, remember
loved ones, and fight back against the disease that takes too much from too
many. We Relay overnight because cancer never sleeps, and we will keep
fighting until we find cures.
At Relay For Life, teams of friends, families, schools, sports teams, businesses,
and organizations join together at a local school track, college campus, park,
or fairground, where everyone takes turns walking throughout the night.
Teams set up tents (often decorated to match team names and themes) and bring
food, games, sleeping bags, and chairs that will be used during the event.
Participants enjoy entertainment, activities, and special ceremonies throughout
the Relay. Each team submits a registration/commitment fee, and each
member is asked to try and raise a minimum of $100 for the American Cancer
Society to fund lifesaving programs and services that help people stay well, get
well, find cures, and fight back.
Cancer survivors and caregivers are the guests of honor as each Relay kicks off
with special recognition to everyone who has faced a cancer diagnosis or helped
someone with cancer. After nightfall, hundreds of candles in honor or
memory of loved ones touched by cancer are lit in the luminaria ceremony.
It is a heartfelt reminder of how cancer touches us all.
Relay For Life represents our hope that those lost to cancer will never be
forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer
will be eliminated.
