Team Member Checklist
People always think of committee members and team captains as having the
important responsibilities. After all, a team captain leads a team of 8 to
15 people to participate in the Relay For Life, raise funds to fight cancer, and
increase everyone's awareness of cancer and the Relay. No small task!
But a team captain, and a Relay, are only as good as their team members.
Each and every person is critical to a successful Relay. To this end, here
is a checklist that each team member can follow to help them be successful.
1. Before the Relay.
- Make sure you understand what is expected of you from your team captain.
There is a registration fee of $10 per person, and you will be asked to try and
raise a minimum of $100 to support the Relay For Life.
- Receive a collection envelope and other related Relay For Life documents and
fundraising information from your team captain.
- Learn about the Relay For Life. People will be much more willing to make a
donation if you believe in what you're asking them to help with.
- Relays are a lot more fun when we have a lot more people involved, so get out
there and encourage everyone you know to join your team of 8-15 people, or start
their own!
- After your team captain has set up your team's page on our
online registration and
fundraising system, please follow these
instructions to sign up, set up your
account, and start raising money online!
- Try to meet and exceed your fundraising goal. Look for many great
fundraising ideas on this website, and please share
your fundraising ideas with us so that we can share them with everyone else!
- Sell luminaria to those who
want to honor cancer survivors and those they have lost to cancer. Make
sure donors know they can also purchase luminaria online!
- Invite cancer survivors and caregivers to
our Relay. They are our honored and special guests.
- Think about all of the people you know. There are so many people who have
been affected by cancer or want to make a difference. All you have to do
is ask! Would your company make a monetary or in-kind (goods) donation?
Does your company match your donation?
(If they're not on the list, please ask anyway. Many companies will match
gifts but haven't registered with the American Cancer Society.) Do you
know someone with a local business that might be interested in having a team or
making a donation? Don't forget to tell your team captain or a planning
committee member about these contacts. It makes a huge difference!
- Attend all meetings held by your team captain.
- Participate in and help organize team fundraising events, and be sure to
let us know what's going on so we can help you
promote them.
- Think of ways you can decorate your campsite at Relay!
- Visit this website regularly! There is a wealth of information here, and
we update this site frequently, especially as we draw closer to Relay!
- Make sure your team is prepared to bring
all of the essentials!
2. During the Relay.
- Please remember to follow all of these
guidelines while at the event.
- Turn in any additional donations collected to your team captain as soon as
possible.
- Help set up your team's campsite and decorations.
- Walk during all of your appointed times. Your team captain will provide
you with a walking schedule.
- Participate in all of the fundraisers and activities that take place during
Relay. Check our Relay event
schedule as we draw closer to the event to see what's happening.
- We're always on the lookout for volunteers, so if you have some spare time and
would like to help out, please check with any committee member and ask what you
can do.
3. After the Relay.
- Provide your team captain with lots of good, constructive feedback.
- Be sure to complete the survey we mail out shortly after the Relay ends.
- Check in on how your team did.
- Attend any wrap-up events your team or your Relay invites you to.
- Consider starting your own team next year!
4. Information specific to our youth teams.
Youth teams are made up of participants under the age of 18. Our youth
team members have some special responsibilities above and beyond those of other
team members:
- First, please explain Relay to your parents or guardians. Tell them when
and where it is, how it works, and encourage them to join us or ask us any
questions they may have.
- Help find chaperones for your team! the American Cancer Society requires
all youth teams to have a minimum of one chaperone over the age of 25 for every
5 youth participants.
Each chaperone must also sign and return a chaperone agreement form (found on
this page) as soon as possible. Don't wait until the last minute to
find chaperones!
- Have both you and a parent or legal guardian sign and date your
youth participation form (found on this page) and return it to your team
captain promptly. Please remember that you must turn in one of these forms
before being admitted to the event.
- Have both you and a parent or legal guardian sign and date your money collection
envelope when you are done with it and return it to your team captain.
